Ava Ceremony

Image
Yesterday we had a traditional Ava Ceremony to welcome our 3 new expat General Managers to Samoa and to our company.

Ava: or Kava \Ka"va\, n. [Polynesian.] (Bot.) A species of Macropiper, the long pepper, from the root of which an intoxicating beverage is made by the Polynesians, by a process of mastication; also, the beverage itself. (Source: http://dict.die.net/kava/)

Hence an Ava Ceremony is a ceremony to distribute, prepare and drink ava. It's purpose (coz it's not just an excuse to get tipsy) is as a ceremony of Welcome. It's evolved quite a bit I imagine, because basically, its a fancy way for old men to sit in a circle, have a chat and drink some home brew prepared by one of their daughters. As a way of welcome, they'll offer some grog to the new guy. Of course, nowadays its a drawn out process involving chief title holders fighting for the chance to say the official speech of welcome, the highest chief's maiden daughter prepares the ava and a fair bit o…

Drugged and thinking about paradoxes in my life…

DISCLAIMER: I'm a little drowsy as I write this, I've just taken my flu medication - I was on Panadol Cold and Flu for a week 3 weeks ago - no change, got some antibiotics (amoxycillin) - still coughing... and now I'm on this stuff (Biaxin XL) these fat yellow tablets that I only have to take once a day with food... and man, it goes straight to my head coz right now, I feel half way to passing out... Hopefully (and I'm quite excited about this) this stuff will FINALLY work! so anyways - its kind of put me in a particularly random mood so if I sound like I'm on something... I'm saying it now - I am.

Weird huh?
Earlier tonight while my cousin and I were watching an ad for Protex Herbal soap on TV during news hour, I said to my cousin that one of her good friends is allergic to soap (I know this coz she stayed with me and our other cousin (who is also good friends with the 'friend') and we had to make a late night run to the dairy to buy said friend some soa…

some afternoon amusement

Ok, so its a slow Friday afternoon and I'm browsing the net (deja vu) I came across Zach Braff's blog (the dude in Scrubs that directed and acted in Garden State with Nat Portman) and it made for some humourous reading on a bore of an afternoon... He's quite funny, I imagine him to be a lot like his character on Scrubs coz reading his blog - its the same sort of intelligent-imaginative-so-dorky-its-cool humour *chuckle*.

Here's some lines I ripped off his blog that I found funny...

"Ho, ho, ho!" said the pimp calling roll at the morning meeting."It's 80 degrees in LA, so I'm not really getting my hopes up about a white Christmas. Christmas is also my step-mother's birthday and to be honest I think she's a little pissy she has to share her big day with a Messiah. It's one thing to share it with a celebrity like Anthony Michael Hall or Tanya Harding, but I imagine the celebration of your birth gets upstaged when people are decorating tre…

I'm fine... really. *cough*

Ok, so I'm down with this bad ass flu/ cough thingie again. There's a bug going round at the moment and everyone here has had it, has it, or will get it sooner or later. Now I don't get sick easily or often but when I do, I get it bad and for long. So, I've been coughing my chest out and sniffing my nose sore for about the last week. I'm being annoyed to bits by everyone, and I mean everyone telling me to go and see a doctor. Not bad advice, and it's not that I have anything against doctors or anything, but in all seriousness, I feel fine. I don't feel sick, just annoyed rather when my cough interrupts my train of thought or conversation. If anything is making me sick its people breathing down my neck about seeing a doctor. Problem is, I sound a lot more sick than I am, so I have a hard time convincing people to get off my case about going to see the damn doc. Every day, as I got in to work earlier this week - everyone, left, right and centre is telling me…

I'm watching you...

Today, I put a hit counter on my blog! *Points* See down there under 'Archives' in the sidebar. Why? Just to see how the busy traffic is down this neck of the woods. *Shrugs* That, and coz its raining outside, coz its another slow day at work today, coz I'm sick and coz I just felt like it. :o)

My bad day at work

I had a bad day at work last Friday. I guess one bad day at work after 2 months working isn't too bad - but for some reason it made me really sad. :( In the beat-around-the-bush way that I feel like describing this, I'll say that a comment someone made me feel no bigger than a 2 cent coin. I will also say, it was the kind of incident that only happens in Samoa, because its such a small place because it was purely by accident that it happened. Hence, I shouldn't feel so bad. It also happened between myself and someone that isn't as bright as they make themselves out to be, hence I shouldn't feel so bad. Furthermore, it happened in a circumstances that anyone, not just someone of my age and inexperience was bound to have a bit of trouble with, hence I shouldn't feel so bad. However, that day, I felt worse than anyone could tell by looking at me. And this sounds pathetic, but when I think about it now, it still hits me where it hurts.

To prevent this from being a t…

THRILLS!!

Cheap Thrill 1.
I just got my first business card today - with my name on it and all... hahaha! If someone could see me right now - I wouldn't blame them from thinking that I'm working on some important document as I sit here at my desk, papers and folders sprawled across my desk, a "thinkers look" on my face as I tap calmly at the keyboard. Wouldn't they crack up to know that inside I can hardly contain my excitement - my very first business card... I feel like framing it - I won't of course, but that's just how I feel. What can I say - its one of those milestones I set myself when I was kid. That and I'm just easily amused yea.

Cheap Thrill 2.
Ok, the boys from Manu Samoa were just in our Board Room having a meeting with our CEO. I got called in to help serve cookies and coffee and other foods that noone will eat to people that could, but never do eat them. It's not secret that I'm a BIT of a rugby fan, speshly our local boys... So I smacked on…

my simple thoughts

My simple thoughts on:

The obliteration of the Lion's by the All Blacks, last night.
I was utterly and mostestly thrilled that the All Blacks won last night, coz well, there's more brown brothers in that team then there is white boys in the Lions... no, not really - but you get my point - it should be called All Browns. Still, as elated as I was, I was a tad disappointed that the Lions didn't win - purely because I thought if there was any team that rise above the whole "spear tackle incident" and come back vicious - it was the Lions, and of course if they won now, the AB's victory in the third test would be that tiny bit more sweet.

They came out firing in the first half.. and then they kinda didn't get better. They slammed 5th gear in the first 10 mins and didn't have a notch up to go... The AB's on the other hand just kept getting better. Speshly that Danny Carter, gettin' a bit Carlos Spencer with his styles - except Danny actually converts …
